As a host community, Lake Lure provided the starting point for riders, coordinating closely with Cycle NC and VisitNC to ensure a seamless experience. “Being part of something that the state and tourism industry recognize is huge for us,” said Don Cason, Executive Director of the Rutherford County TDA, reflecting on the event’s significance. “It was exciting to see riders experiencing our trails and community firsthand.”
Riders set out from Lake Lure on a route that included portions of the Thermal Belt Rail Trail, a 13.5-mile paved multi-use trail that connects towns across Rutherford County, including Rutherfordton, Ruth, Spindale, and Forest City. Volunteers staffed rest stops along the route, offering refreshments and encouragement, while residents gathered to cheer riders through their communities. Many participants remarked on the trail’s smooth surface, scenic views, and the sense of welcome they felt from locals.
“This kind of event puts Rutherford County on the map in a way we wouldn’t get otherwise,” Don explained, noting the opportunity to showcase the county’s growing reputation for outdoor recreation. Beyond the boost in tourism, the event also gave residents a chance to take pride in the public spaces and trails they use year-round, spaces that have become cornerstones of local life.
One of the standout moments for Don came when he shared his vision for the county with the riders: “Yes, they saw the beauty here, but there’s more good to come. We hope they come back in the next five years and see how our community continues to grow as a destination.” His words captured both excitement and optimism for Rutherford County’s future, showing how moments like these connect visitors to place while strengthening the community’s identity from within.
Events like the Cycle NC Mountains-to-Coast Ride reflect Rutherford County’s ongoing commitment to developing recreation and tourism assets through the Rutherford Bound initiative.
